Rite of City – Reminisce

This is a place where has been washed by many people and many stories by years of time. To the place, the consciousness of an individual is insignificant. It is that one second, one minute, one day, one month, one year, one century that gives colors of the

present. Besides from time, what we could also see are all those people and things of the past that are absent at this moment.

If paper umbrellas can be elevated from everyday usage items to works of art, so can heritage buildings. With a paper umbrella, a song and the streets of the City of Tainan, director Maurice Lai makes us reflect on urban development. In the course of four centuries, Tainan was subjected to multicultural influences. For the past 20 years, it has been at the crossroad of the transition from old to new in its urban development. How much of the ancient capital should be preserved? How much should be demolished for the sake of development? The film looks back and examines past values. By choosing the filming locations from an architectural and humanistic point of view, Tainan architect Tsai Chiang Kuo Chi enriches the work with greater depth and affection. This film is one of the commissioned works of the 5th Jumping Frames International Dance Video Festival and was selected in Short Film Corner of Cannes Film Festival 2013.

With the camera focused on the plight of a battered prisoner, deprived of his freedom, and in pain

until his last breath, Director Leecat Ho considers the power of an individual’s conviction and the

legacy of their sacrifice. The prisoner’s body might have vanished but his spirit will survive,

blossoming in a flicker of eternal sunshine. This is one of the commissioned works of the 5th

Jumping Frames International Dance Video Festival and was selected in Short Film Corner,

Festival of Cannes 2013.

“When you really love dancing, you will stick with it at all times.” Our two Chinese dancers Yangand Lao immerse themselves into the urban texture of Portugal, in pursuit of inspirations and cross-cultural enlightenment. Their means of cross-cultural communication are none other than their own bodies, which were liberated from their usual boundaries of the stage to the open air of the public space. Bold steps are made not only in the dance movement, but also in the break off

from the stiff norms of Chinese ideologies. Fado singers improvise joyously with the two oriental bodies, as the dance finds its way into the dark corners of the city.

When Time rolls on,waiting for no man, the Lilau keeps a wealth of memories, stories and anecdotes about wells and water sources of Macau. As a popular saying goes, “One who drinks from Lilau never forgets Macao”. The inherited values contained in the water, the soil as well as the leaves, while memory transmitted by the people in a flashback.

“Flashback at the Lilau” is an environment dance project developed from the art tour “Heritage Stroll with Poetries” at the Historic Centre of Macau in 2012.

Hong Kong is well known for its high density concrete jungle, but not many are as familiar with its rich, verdant countryside. The French-Belgium dance company t.r.a.n.s.i.t.s.c.a.p.e takes an

interest in Hong Kong territory and reveals both its urban landscapes and natural environment as two dancers - Emmanuelle Vincent from Belgium and Ivy Tsui from Hong Kong – physically explore

the radically opposite locations. The work is enhanced by original music by singer/musician

Matthieu Ha. Commissioned work of the 5th Jumping Frames International Dance Video festival.

Certain daily memories and fantasy, become small Punctums which stimulating the body. The punctum is being projected in the dream unconsciously, and trying to be a sleepwalker of memories in fantasy for itself, seeking the connection between body and imagination.
